Bringing California students and families together at the State Capitol to advocate for children affected by childhood cancer — and to share their stories

Bringing California students and families to the State Capitol to advocate for children with childhood cancer and share their stories
This initiative brings together students and families from across California to advocate for children affected by childhood cancer.
At the inaugural California Pediatric Cancer Advocacy & Awareness Day, students and families engage directly with policymakers, clinicians, and advocates — and share their own stories — on behalf of children affected by childhood cancer, including DIPG.
With preparation and travel support, participating students and families build skills in:
Learn how bills become laws and navigate California's legislative system
Master the art of conveying complex medical issues to decision-makers
Represent voices of children and families impacted by rare diseases
What this initiative aims to achieve for students, families, and the broader community
Support participation of students and families from across California with travel and logistical assistance for Advocacy Day
Help participating students and families prepare ahead of the event for their meetings with legislators
Facilitate student and family participation in meetings with state legislators, staff, and policy leaders during Advocacy Day
Give students and families the chance to share their experiences with childhood cancer directly with lawmakers
Ensure the voices of students and families from across California are represented in pediatric cancer advocacy
Foster lasting community engagement among participating students, families, and their communities
This initiative creates ripple effects across the state
Students and families from across California gain hands-on experience in advocacy and share their stories through direct participation in statewide events.
By focusing on childhood cancer, we shine a light on critical health issues that affect children and families across California.
Bringing students and families together as advocates reinforces California's role in shaping compassionate, informed health policy at the state level.
The experience fosters civic responsibility, leadership development, and long-term community engagement among participating students and families that extends far beyond Advocacy Day.
September is nationally recognized as Childhood Cancer Awareness Month — and we are asking California legislators to make it official.
